Has anyone tried to switch flywheels from a manual tranny 300 to an auto or vise versa? I'm just wondering if using used flywheels would raise any balance issues. I've converted manual to auto before using a new flywheel but never used. I suppose I could get the flywheel rebalanced but would like to save the expense.
The 300 inline six is internally balanced, so
you will need a zero balance flex plate off
another 300 inline six. The six holes for the
bolts which hold the flex plate to the crankshaft
are offset slightly, so there is only one way
you can ever put one on and have all the bolt
holes line up properly. Other than that, you
will need to pull the pilot bearing out of the
end of the crankshaft so that the nub on the
torque converter will fit where it needs to go.
The same is true if you are converting an
automatic to manual, other than that you
need to press in a pilot bearing for the
manual transmission input shaft instead of
pulling it out.
Zero balance, and there is only ever one
way to put the flywheel on and have all the
holes line up correctly. Also, the manual
flywheel will take longer bolts than the
automatic flex plate.
I don't know the part number for the short
automatic bolts, but I just bought a set of 6
long manual bolts for my 351W that I converted
to manual transmission. The 300 uses the same
flywheel to crankshaft bolts as the 351W ...
