Stopped by a local muffler shop and talked w the guy. He said he could run true duals and flowmasters out the back for $300.. Hows this sound, worth getting the true duals??
I think that price sounds pretty cheap!, but what kind of tubing is he using? aluminized at least I'd hope. Personal experience with true duals on my 95 was awesome when I added long tube headers as well. That was by far the most performance bang for my buck I ever got. Don't know first hand how the 5.4l will respond, but I'm sure you won't LOSE power, and IT'LL SOUND SWEEEEEEET!- Ever go to flow masters web site and listen to the sound clips of there products? It's like music to the ears!
If your exhaust guy is willing to run duals for $300, it is probably going to be a single in and double out with pre-stamped piping. This is still a better system than what you currently have unless he puts the wrong muffler on and chokes your engine down. Flowmaster will give you more of a growl sound and Magnaflow will give you more of a smooth rumble. I have had both and prefer the Magnaflow as I grow older I want some sound, but don't want to have to scream to my passengers.
I have Magnaflow on my 06 5.4 and experienced a slight, (maybe my impression only), increase in power. I had a tech tell me not to put flowmaster on if I was going to pull anything heavy, which I do. (8k toyhauler). Love the sound and @ 59 probably wouldn't appreciate anything louder. I paid quite a lot more than 3 bills for mine. If you can get it for 3, go for it IMHO.
I paid $479 for my Magnaflow catback with 3" stainless steel piping. that is cheaper than all of my previous "custom" dual exhaust jobs.
Magnaflow sounds nice and is more refined. You know it's a V-8, but it's not the in your face loud
Flowmaster are less refined and the sound quality is what most people in the 16-18 yr old bracket want to hear. loud and harsh.
I love the roar of my GT's Magnaflow Magnapack exhaust, but a DD truck should be fun to drive and not induce headaches
thanks for the responses. he did say dual in and dual out, i made clear of that. I might just have to talk him into magnaflow, he's a good ole boy and all he knows is flowmaster..
I would get it done. I have flowmaster and I don't know why people ever complain about it. It sounds awesome to me. Not too loud when driving, but when you kick it down it's mean sounding. I just drove 300 miles this weekend and never had to yell at passengers while driving 80 mph.

I am hoping to get my truck on the dyno some time this week. I have the numbers (228 hp and 292 ft/lb torque) from before the Magnaflow (generic muffler with 3 inch pipe from just behind the y-pipe) and I want to see what difference the exhaust made. Unfortunately, it is not the same dyno I had for the last runs so I'm not sure how comparable the results will be. Very lucky though to have a Mustang M1100 about 5 minutes from where I live and for $100 CAD an hour (that's about $105 USD these days)
