This is the direction I want to go--and my tire guy (at Firestone) wants me to have the Blizzak's, too--but other than buying 17" rims from a Ford dealer, we don't know where to get some "cheap" ones. Any suggestions on sources for rims that will, for sure, clear the brake calipers on the 2008 Super Duty?
Thanks.
Mike
I'm pretty sure you can use the 2005-2007 17 inch rims. They are available off of ebay.
Ive used Blizzaks and BFG AT' sin the winter before.. They are both great tires.. No doubt about it, but if you plan on getting off the pavement at all, Id go with the BFG's for sure..The blizzaks are great on road because of the sipes, but the BFG's have sipes as well.. Also, for rims, did you think about black rock crawlers?? Pretty cheap, mag chloride doesnt eat em, and if you need to touch 'em up black spray paint does wonders..
I agree with the BFG AT recommendation, The is the only tire I have bought since my first set in 99'. I had them on my 2wd F-250 and I could not get stuck in the snow with them! We had a 16" snow storm and I tried to get stuck. The truck would just stop moving, dig down a little and throw us 10 or 20 feet then the truck would come to a stop and start the process over again. I had snow up to the bottom of the doors! It was crazy and between the snow and mud capabilities along with the long lasting tread I am a believer for life!!!
Here is a link to Green Diamond Tires, they are highly rated for snow ice tires, and there are several dealers in Colorado. The are available in 265/70R17E
I had a set of those on the 96 F-250 I traded in last week.. I personally think its a gimmick.. I think the tread pattern makes way more difference.. I bought them from www.treadwright.com formerly High-Tec Retreads... Great tires, no doubt about it, but the green diamond stuff really didnt impress me.. Ill buy more tires from them, but prob not green diamonds..
I guess it all depends on where you drive if you drive on the road or plow and tackle any hills or warm snow you need a dedicated winter tire. A set of BFG's would kill me as my driveway is steep. I use some blizzaks..I have been looking at some coopers lately they are awsome winter tires that are studable LRE I might sell my blizzaks I don't know yet..I'll see if I can get a link..
Just a thought I know a manager at Discount Tire and they are supposed to have a warehouse of rims and tires that are new or close to new take offs. You could get a set of factory 17's from them, or of course ebay. I am in Woodland Park by the way, gotta love the snow.
