ford dealer tech

I was talking to a ford diesel tech today about egt's and he could not give me a answer on what stock egt's should be and how high before they do damage. From what i have researched people say don't go over 1300F but on a stock run i'm hitting 1197F exactly with muf and cat delete. Does the zoodad drop your egt's or do i need better intercooler. You would think ford would know what your egt's should be.

i personally hit 1400+ for short bursts with certain programs. There are guys here who would spin the needle around if the gauge let them. So not to worry about the temp your seeing. There are tons of threads about this if you do a search.

Not so much the temps, it is how long you sustain them.

the issue is that we as ford techs do not use EGTs as part of any diagnostic proceedures, there is not a pyrometer stock on your truck and not a PID we can moitor.

so we as ford techs have no way of knowing, although because of some our knowledge on aftermarket products, most say not to exceed 1350*F pre-turbo. Some people like Matt have reported temps as high as 1800-2,000*F. this is not safe and will melt your engine down in a hurry.
My dynomax tune will definetly hit 1400 but as long as you do not hold it there for miles you will not do any damage.

So then a all stock truck pulling a grade should have nothing to worry about?

I can not push my EGT's pass 1100 with my slight mods (pulling 28' trailer). All stock otherwise.

really, mine will stock. is your pryrometer post turbo? thats would make more sense if it were because they state a 300* loss through through the up up pipes and turbo on most engines.

you would think that the stock egt's would be okay and never go over the limmit but i was empty going up hill and the outside tempreture was -2Celcius so how hot would i get with a trailer on and +20 celcius. I guess we will find out next summer

No i would think stock should be fine, no need to monitor it. if you want to know how hot it gets drill your manifold and install some guages no sense in talking about how hot it could get, get a real answer.

I did install probe on drivers side. I hit 1200F empty on a cold day and 1300F with the tow tune. I just thought that stock egt's would not be that high considering theres no load on it. I will see how hot it gets next summer with a trailer and warmer temps maybee it won't increase much.If it does i will have to sink some money in mods.
