OK these codes pop up and truck surges badly intermittently.
P1299 cylinder head overtemp protection active
P0136 O2 circuit (bank 1, sensor 2)
P0156 O2 circuit (bank 2, sensor 2)
It appears after the truck is driven for an extended period of time the problem gets better. When it pops these codes it also kicks the vehicle into overdrive if it is off. The truck is 1997 f150 4x4 ext cab. with the 4.6 and auto. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had a similar problem on my 1998 f150 5.4,except that the truck was stumbling more than surging but had the codes po156,po136.I replaced the o2 sensors to no avail.my problem turned out to be a vacuum leak on a rubber elbow at the back of the intake.you couldnt see it unless you were on top of the motor.it had cracked in the elbow.dont know if the 4.6 has a similar piece.

The problem has progressed so that the vehicle will die and can often not be started again without several attempts. There also appears to be an audible clicking noise under the hood when the vehicle's ignition is in the run position but is not running. Could it be that my fuel pump is failing and has caused the O2 sensors to read a lean condition during the intermitent surging and could this also have caused the cylinderhead over temp protection to be activated because it is my understanding that a lean condition can cause and extreme amount of heat. Also the vehicle seemed to be pinging and detonating lots lately which is also a result of a lean conditions. any help would be greatly appreciated.
oh, and i did a check for vacuum leaks like stated above and found one behind the battery box but this appears to have no effect on the problem since it has been fixed

I would start with the fuel pump. Turn the key to the on position and listen for it to hummmm. If it hummmms, check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail. You will need a fuel pressure gauge for this. It should be around 40 psi IIRC. If that checks out fine, I would be thinking fuel pressure regulator or crapped out injectors. After this point, I am lost. Good Luck
I forgot something... Have you changed the fuel filter?
Yes i change my fuel filter once a year (about 10 to 15 thousand kilometers) along with having my injectors professionally cleaned.
ok more info on the issue....
Now the truck pops this code along with the others, although this one appears to pop anytime when the vehicle is running while the others only come on when the intermitent surging/stalling occurs.
P1451 Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit
Also the freeze frame data i collected off the code reader:
Fuel Sys 1 CL
Fuel Sys 2 CL-Fault
Calc Load (%) 65.88
ECT (degrees F) 194
STFT B1 (%) -0.78
LTFT B1 (%) 15.63
STFT B2 (%) 0.00
LTFT B2 (%) 15.63
ENG RPM 2130
VEH SPEED (MPH) 37
I cleared the codes a number of times while driving and they reappeared with one difference depending on what i was doing.
Fuel sys 1 OL-drive-----only under wide open throttle this will happen but will return to CL as soon as not under WOT.
Also the pinging/detonating seems to have worsened considerably and the vehicle does not have any power.
Oh and one last thing, the hmmm of the fuel pump turns into a clicking sound when the problem occurs.
I hope someone can tell me what this all means. Thanks again.

I'm just curious, have you verified that you do not have a cat converter clogging up?
I would also check the body, chassis and PCM grounds to verify they are good. Could be getting some feedback thru a bad ground.
another update.....
Took apart every ground i could find on the vehicle and polished the ring terminal and area where it bolts, this did not help. Also i figured out where this clicking sound was coming from and it appears to the PCM relay clicking wildly in the power distribution box. I changed the relay and it still acts up. Where do i go next.........................
on the rubber elbow, my '97 4.6l does have one at the back of the engine and it looks as if it is ready to disintegrate...could cause all kinds of problems
