sorry guys, but you know, if we wanted all out speed, at any fuel price, we need big block 460's. we used to have two, but couldn't put gas in them lol. we have a steep hill north of here in lincoln county. its called halls gap. we pulled out with a 460 2 wheel drive, 90 model 5 speed bulldog 4.10 gears. dingle cab long bed. we had a 20 foot cattle trailer (6700 pounds empty), and had a cow tied to every standard. about 13 show cattle. the least one weighed 800 pounds. they went up to 2000 pounds(a bull) but averaged prolly 1000#. total of prolly 21,000. he topped the in your face hill which is about 3 miles long at 75 mph in fourth gear, taking off at the bottom. those 460's are beasts, and you will spend huge amounts trying to get a diesel to the speed a 460 will run, and pull.
I love the old big blocks. I've got a heavily modded 460 in my Bronco and love it. I just can't keep gas in it, those 750 cfm double pump Holley's can move some fuel.
A 90 model 460 was rated at either 225 or 235 HP....put roughly the same power to the ground as a stock PSD, only it did it with less torque. The only advantage the 460 has is abut 1000 more useable rpm. Add $1000 woth of identical parts to both engines and the gasser doesn't have a prayer.

You know....I was born at night, but it wasn't last night.

i love this thread. i thinks its point is for all of us with non stock trucks to get a laugh. you just dont know what you got under the hood until you add more fuel to the FIRE!!!!!!!!!
Ummmmmmm No??? Wrong engine for speed? Is there such a thing? Every engine is built for speed, otherwise we'd still pulling carts with ox's. It's all in how you look at an engine. Every engine I've owned I've looked at it and said "I'm gonna make this SOB FAST!" And so far my Powerstroke has been the strongest and fastest on the street. I have a blown 460 in my mud truck. And believe me, it's a bad mother. But I damn sure wouldn't pit it against a stroke. Honestly, I think this was a "I'll say this and see who gets pissed" threads.
sorry. didn't mean to **** anyone off, but i know that those 460's hit their peak torque and hp at a much lower rpm. gassers rev up so much faster, but, yes the torque band is narrower. the don't hold as well on the hills, but light to light the big blocks still got us, unless we spend an ungodly amount on our trucks.
the 460 may beat the psd from light to light but it can rev double the rpms a diesel can i wouldnt worry about pulling speeds a psd you can run 70-80 mph all day long and never have a problem i think if you ran a 460 like that somethin would give
