What is the procedure for doing this yourself? I can't find an EFI "inertia switch" to relieve the fuel pressure on the firewall. The filter itself should be fairly easy to take out with the clips and easy plug on lines.
My concern is the fuel pressure and spillage and properly setting this up so I don't have a big mess or a mistake on my hands. Advice would be great.
Well I learned the hard way when I changed my 1st EFU fuel filter. I didn't even know these motors held their pressure, so I ended up with face full of gas (didn't get the eyes thankfully). The intertia switch merely kills the power to the fuel pump in case you get in a wreck. I'm not aware that it relieves pressure. My book shows a "process" for relieving pressure that doesn't involve pressing a button or doing it an easy way. So, here's what I do (the non-professional way), have the new filter handy, undo the band clamp, pull the clips, take a big rag and wrap around the filter (take care to cover the end well), then pull it off (stay to one side). If its 1st thing in the morning, before you've run it, most of the pressure will have bleed off overnight and nothing will happen. Otherwise you get a 1 second spray of about 2 oz of gas and that's it. The lines will drip gas from backflow. That's why you have the new filter handy (pop it in real fast). Pay attention to the gas flow direction arrow. Guarantee, you won't lose over a 1/2 pint of gas.
Hi, the inertia switch is located on behind the lower left kick board in the cab. What you are suposed to do so you don't get a face full of gas is pop the botton up and start the engine and run it out of gas(pressure). You can also find the Schrader fitting ( tire Valve)on the rear of the fuel rail and depress it , like you were letting out air from a tire,. Don't do it with a hot engine or with the ignition on and wrap a rag around the fitting or you are going to take a bath
Just a note, on some F series it seems the inertia sw is on the passengers side in the same place , lower kick pannel. The 92 specs say it is on the left side.
Thanks guys. However, I still can't find the inertia switch. Supposedly it's on the firewall under the drivers side dash or the passengers side kickboard. I have no idea where it is on this '93.
Is this a job better suited to my mechanic or can I accomplish this without taking a gasoline bath?
The mechanic books don't mention using the inertia switch to releive the pressure. They mention the zerk fitiing on the fuel rail and then use a device to belled it off. For my truck, that fitting is at the back of the rail and it would tough to get.
I thought that was a great way, but I like my way better. Change the filter 1st thing in the morning before you crank and build up pressure, use a rag to shield any spray in case it does. I've done a dozen and yes I get a little gas running down my arm, but its a 5 minute job and I lose less than a 1/2 pt of gas. Just do it.
i just happened to replace my fuel filter on my 93 f150 2 days ago. i found the pressure relief button behind the right kick panel on the passenger side. it seemed to work the way it was supposed to.
Thanks guys. Took off the kick panel on the passenger side and disconnected the switch. Worked like a charm. Driveway is on a slope so fuel spillage was a minimum. Thanks.
