04 sd250 cc sb 4x4 5.4 auto 161,000 On the hiway is get about 12-14 mpg and 70mph
in town less than 30 mph and very little warm up time a 1/4 tank will only go 30 miles. Not reall happy with that. What do I need to do to improve the in town mpg. I drive very slow with no quick strats. I drive like an old man with no where to go. My old 97 psd did better on mpg than this pickup. It starts and rund great. Should I change the fuel filter? I put a new air cleaner in it.
I did change all the fulids in it when I got it. After changing the antifreeze the pickup ran hot and put it self into safe mode. I am not sure why because it had plenty of coolent. I had a yellow check engine light on. I disconnected the battery for about 5 minutes and no more check engine light. Never overheated again.
thanks
Your mileage is on the low side of average, but still average.
To increase mileage, keep your vehicle tuned up, keep your tires inflated (on the high side of the inflation range) and in town accelerate so the truck never goes over 2000 RPM. (Yes, it is possible).
Dont expect miracles. Compared to every other pickup on the road a Super Duty is heavy. It isn't going to get 20 MPG. If the stars align I can squeeze out 17 MPG, but my normal MPG is 14.5-15.5 each tank, depending on how that tank was driven.

That mileage sounds about right. You have to rember the CC is a good bit of weight to haul around, the 5.4l will get a workout even on the highway.
Also Wendal, you may want to pull off the MAF sensor and give it a good cleaning with MAF cleaner. After your done disconnect the battery for about 15 seconds and connect the battery. This will make the computer relearn and adjust to the clean MAF.
Since your truck has a bit of miles on it you could also pull off the throttle body and give it a good cleaning. Over time carbon can build up in the throttle body.
I would also change the spark plugs and boots. Plugs are good for about 50k and then they should be changed.
