WAIT!!!! the dealership told me the exact same thing! they were going to charge me $800 to fix the seal in my hubs. since i couldn't afford it anyways, i took it home, traced my lines (they were ok) and then figured out it was the vacuum solenoid. Went back to the dealership and picked up the part for $59 and put it in myself and now everything works perfect. i'd replace that first before you drop a bunch of money into your hubs.

Use a handheld vacuum pump on the vacuum port at the hub and see if it will hold. If it will not, then you have a seal problem. You can test each section of the vacuum system this way by simply isolating it from the rest of the system.

By doing some simple diagnostics, you can protect yourself from unscrupulous dealerships and mechanics.

On the other hand, if you really do have hub seal leakage and let it go, water and dirt will infiltrate your hub; take out the spindle bearing which will also ruin the 4x4 stub shaft. Metal flakes and rust will get into the main bearings and the entire hub unit will fail.

Mine ('o2 truck) is on the right fender (engine compartment) near the vacuum pump. Two bolts hold it on.
