so, while tearing my truck down to replace various clutch parts, i noticed that my rear diff has some free play. with the drive shaft unbolted, i can rotate the pinion flange about 1/16" either direction with the rear tires on the ground and the parking brake set. is this normal? shall i start the swearing now?
btw, i have recently noticed a slight rocking sensation when i let off the throttle, or accelerate while the truck is at speed. could this be the culprit?
i have a little bit of the same. going from park to D or R it clunks. put back in park insp the u-joints nothing no play all tight unhook driveshaft slight play in rearend. is this the norm or is that a spec on this? the truck has 118500 miles on the clock.
the amount of play the gears have is specified but it measured at the gear teeth 1/16" sounds like a lot but to be sure you would have to check the backlash at the gears

I think what they are talking about is backlash by mentioning rotate
if so is normal
How about the pins for the spider set, the holes that they go through are getting oval shaped?
This is a possibility I have never thought of but usually there is enough preload on the carrier bearings so that any play you feel at the pinion usually is not rotating the carrier at all.
