We first did it to Jerry's (water5) stock 302; 65mm throttle body, GT-40 intakes and some of the Lightning MAF parts I had laying around. He used an E-cam with that but the 302 was still a little sluggish down low. Later Jerry went with a rebuilt 5.8 and Edlebrock heads and that made a big difference, though the E-cam didn't shine until mid/late RPM's. A higher stall/lock-up converter would've made a huge difference and it would still be very streetable.

I have a billet, 2800 stall in my Lightning and it runs and drives near stock under normal driving conditions; it's a different story when I get into the throttle though. The converter flashes higher and that torque multiplication makes a difference, especially in a heavy truck.

I have a 1957 Ford F100 with an '86 block with Performer RPM cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Edelbrock RPM heads, with 2.02, 1.60, 347 stroker kit from Scat, Edelbrock 600 cfm manual choke, Cragar Full Leangth Headers from 1976, 2.25 pipes with Flowmaster 40 Series, Electric Fan, Weiand Water pump. with C4 Trans, 31 in. tall tires out back, 3.90:1 Ford 9 in. and it will spank the hell out of Mustangs, Camaros, and most things on the street. Then again I spent $6,000 on the engine alone. haven't taken it to the 1/4 mile yet. Soon will post some E.T.'s

The 351W is only about 50 lbs heavier than the 302. If you used some aluminum heads on the 351W it would weigh only slightly more, maybe 10-15 lbs more.
