Obs Hay Convoy

Ok, Heres The Scoop. We Started Talking In The "gonna Test The Old Girl Tommorrow" Thread About Hauling Hay Into Drought Stricken Areas. I Am Right In The Middle Of The Area, In Somerset, Ky, And People Are Pricing Hay For $55-$100 A Roll For Grass Hay, And $8 For Squares, And Cant Keep It In. So, We Were Talking About Who Would Be Interested In An Obs Hay Haul From Areas God Saw Fit To Bless With Rain Into Here So Everyone Isn't Gettin Robbed, And Mark It Up Enough To Pay Fuel, Food, Ect. Whats Most Of Us Get? About 9 Mpg With Big Loads? I Can Use My Obs And Dad's Nbs And We Can Take Out 30 Rolls In A Whack Between Us, If You Guys Can Help. We Can All Make Enough For Fuel, And Call The Rest Fun. And We Can Say The Buck Would Stop There. Put Our Mods To The Test. Heck, Might Get Us In A Magazine Or Two Or Three Lol.

CONVOY!!!!!!!!

that sounds like a great idea. but were are you gonna get the hay from, and what if there are people who will help haul but dont have a trailer? im not nagging, its just something to think about. if i were closer i would love to help, and put the truck to the test.

edit: sorry i just read the put the truck to the tes thread. forget about my first question.

good rounds are going for around $50 and sq for $6

we have alot of hay thats cheaper the biggest issue with the cheaper hay is the protien is very low since it got rained on forever and couldnt get it cut and rolled up and all the fertilizer went to the weeds in the early part of the season. the later part of the season the protien is where it needs to be.

ive seen some hay down in the $30 range but its bottom of the barrel cow hay, i know someone that bought some and protien was only 7% id just consider that filler.

Checked on some things, and keep in mind guys, I dont know crap about hay or farming, but I know a lot about shipping. Up here near me, I can get corn stalk for about 15 to 20 a ton, wheat straw for 2 bucks for small square bail, and big round bails for 30 bucks. I dont know if any of that is cheap, or if its high, and all i did was check the hay excahnge website. I might be able to check with a buddy that farms to see whats up. Thing is, Do you guys have a way to sell it BEFORE it gets there, or are we putting the money out of our pockets to the hay and such? Here in lies the problem..... Any ideas??? I saw on uship too that there was a couple of loads coming out of the WI area to KY but they were looking at shipping about 600 bailsa crack. thats about 30 k plus trailer, and NOONE here wants that on their truck. Advice? Concerns? Ideas? Anyone made a sale??? LOL

If the hay comes here it will sell. that is one thing that is for certain. all of Kentucky was extremely dry all summer and most of it still is. we only got about 150 bales on my farm this and normally get about 650. Kentucky produces more beef than any other state that is east of the Mississippi so yes there is definately a market for hay here.

as far as the hay goes I know that some people like to feed it but rolls of corn stalks is one of the worst things you could feed cows. It has next to no nutritional value.

See what we need is a middle man that says to the local people coming in " I got a friend who can bring you so much hay for blank amount of dollars" That way, its bought before it ships and we dont have to pay anything out of pocket. All we have to do is find someone in this forum that wants to make a few extra bucks and get the word out. Then he contacts whoever, and puts the order in, that guy loads and drives to wherever, unloads and gets paid. On his way home. Now, who wants to be the salesman of the group. The good thing here is, it will rotate because their is always drought somewhere right? You might be the salesman this winter and the driver in the spring...LOL

I will deliver some. We have two trucks, two trailers. one truck is a lgith weight though. 18 ft trailer and the bed of a f 150, the other is a 350 with 25 ft gooseneck, and can get a third gooseneck if it pays enough to make viable. Still looking on where to get the good hay so people are happy with it, so I need all the info that I can get on what makes what what, and payment of hay. I dont want to sound untrusting, but I would prefer not to do anything unless I have most, if not all, of the money in my hands, or in the slaesmans hands so I am sure to get paid. And with me not knowing that much about hay, I would have to have an adress as to where to send pics, emails and such directly to so that there would be no confusion on either end. These are just a few things off the top of my head, if you want to talk more aboutit, you can email me directly at
525Enterprises at gmail dot com
I spelled it out so that the bots cant scan and start the junk. Let me know

so your looking for ppl to help you haul hay? if thats what ur getting at then... its almost tempting but couldnt do it just for the cost of fuel. id need money for a room and food. and if i could get that id be in. would just have to wait till dec 1st when i get my DL back.

Guys, I just penciled this effort out and I think to make it work you will need a bigger truck. I have something like 210-220 4X5 bales of grass hay left to be sold. I am selling this hay, with the purchase of 20+ baies, at $22/bale. If someone wanted it for the folks in the dry areas I will sell it at $20/bale.

I checked MapQuest and I am 653 miles from Nashville, all but the last twenty miles is Interstate. Round trip mileage is 1306 miles, @13 MPG average empty and loaded you will need 100 gal. of fuel at $3.50. Add in another $100 for motel and food.

Here are the numbers:
18 bays of hay @ $20 ea $360
100 gallons of fuel @ $3.50/gal $350
Motel/food $100
Total cost to deliver the hay $810
Cost per bay $45/bale

The answer may be to find OTR truckers looking for a load going east from the Dallas/FT Worth area. That is about an hour south of me. I think a 40' trailer would haul 38 bales. The loaded miles would now be 353, but I don't know what shipping charges would be.
