I have had two carbed 300s (see in my gallery) but by far the EFI is much better for a guy like me to whom a carburator is baffling (I understand it in function, but am unable to tune it).
NOw if we include all years, some would say the old HD 300 was the best. It had a forged steel crank instead of the common cast nodular iron crank. The HD was m ainly in big trucks, but also was an option in light trucks for a while, I think in the late 60s early 70s maybe.
HD had lower compression, I believe, for continuous WOT duty. I believe carb'ed motors have slightly smaller combustion chambers and flow a little better than EFI. EFI motors have the cam retarded 4 degrees for emissions purposes. The best MPG I've ever heard reported (20+) was from early 80's F150/F100 carb'ed 300's with the 2.73 or 3.00 highway gears and manual transmissions (usually the Ford 3.03 3-speed).

Mine had a 2.73 with the C6 auto in my 82 F-100. I think it was a mileage grabber for advert purposes. Everything was light duty. Stamped steel I-beams, little rear springs. Looked to be 1/2" narrower than the F-150. It rode better than any truck I've been in since or before. Smooth only approaches the ride description. The mileage was always above 24 mpg. I think that the 94 F-150 I now own will only touch 20 mpg on downhills with a tailwind. LOL! Then again, it has a 3.55 rear ratio.
I've got an 87 f-150 4x4 4spd. Truck is awesome, no troubles at all. 87 was the first year for efi and mine still works flawlessly.
This is in my opinion the best package for a work truck. The 4spds are known for their reliability, the efi makes it a snap to start and drive in any conditions and with the torque of the 300 I can crawl up anything.

Why would your truck be narrower than a F150? Is yours an F100? I've never heard of Ford making narrow 1/2 ton trucks. =/ I thought the F100's were the same size - just not as tricked out suspension.

Hey Bill I think he was refering to the width of the rear springs. The F100s had a lighter duty suspension than the F150s. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe the F100s from the 80s were all 2wd... some I have seen with the smaller 4.5" on 5 bolt pattern ( same as Ranger, Bronco II, Explorer)

Thank you much Pk. I was really confused. Now I just feel dumb. haha
And I'm not sure, but I thought I seen a few F100 4x4's???? Time for google search!
Sorry, got the punctuation incorrect and ended a sentence that was supposed to be a run on sentence...LOL! Any how, yes. The springs were narrower on the F-100. Fewer also. I bought it when it was only a few months old, so it probably wasn't messed with by someone. Just factory trick to have the 24 mpg jump truck for the adverts.

I'd like to have a truck that gets 24mph. 16mpg is getting old. Especially with gasoline at $3 bucks a gallon. What I'd really like to have is a little ford ranger with the 4 banger or 6. That would be perfect for the work I do! I can't afford to put out another 4G's for a truck though, lol. Oh well. A friend of mine told me his 97' toyota corola gets 30 mpg. I wanted to punch him in the face!
He can't load up the bed full of 1000 lbs of junk though, so that made me feel better LOL
IF I drive @ 60mph and watch my vacuum gauge I'll get about 21mpg. My truck is stock SB reg cab 2wd and it has 3.55 gears.
My company LB truck has an auto od and 3.08s and gets about the same. If I had the 3.08s in my truck it would get maybe 2 mpg better. I do need to haul things once in a while so I like the 3.55s
My friends 2.3l 2wd 5spd Ranger gets over 25mpg.
