okay, here is my delemma, I have a 1974 ford f-100, 4 wheel drive ,manual 4 speed with a 390 engine under the hood. I can remember currently without going out to my truck most of my vin number which is F11YRU----- and the rest I forgot for now. Anyway it originally came with a 360 which I beleive the digit Y in my vin number means correct me if I am wrong. In any case it came stock with a 360 and later on down the road the engine was replaced with a 390. I am replacing the current 390 with another 390. When I go to order my long block do I have to know the casting number on my old 390? Or does it really matter as long as I give them the usual info? make,model,year, current engine size? They would like to know my vin number as to be sure of engine size etc. But of course my vin number is useless because I have a different engine than originally stock. Any advice will be very helpful!!!!
I'd give them the casting number of the block you have now, and tell them its a 390 FE going into a 1932 Toyota Monte Carlo Type R. Tell them the desired compression raito, camshaft and any other special upgrades, call it done. I don't think you can go wrong. Ask them if they will spin it on a dyno and break in the cam for you.

Ditto, and if they refuse your requests--------find someone else to deal with, cause they're not the ones you wanted in the first place.
Toyota didn't make the Monte Carlo until 34 or 35, and never had a 390 in the R type...Get it straight or he'll end up with the wrong rotation 390 and the truck will have 4 speeds in reverse...........aMP
You are correct in that the "Y" is the vin code for a 360. Where do you plan on ordering from? Tell them you desire a 390 for a 1969 "Y" code mustang. This will get you the taller compression ratio (over the truck) that I know you want...

There's no such thing as a Y VIN engine code used in 1969 Mustangs, or any other car from 1969. Ford offered a 2V carbed 390 Mustang in 1968 only, the 4V was optional. All the 1967 & 1969 390 Mustangs were 4V's.
Y is the VIN engine code for a 360 from 1968/76.
However, Y is also the VIN engine code for a 352 = 1966/67.
D is the 352 VIN engine code in 1965.
390 passenger car Y VIN engine code: 1966/67 2V; 1968 2V Premium Fuel
>>> 390 Passenger car S VIN engine code: 1966/69 4V. <<<
Info sources: 1965/72 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog; 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog.

All right this guy might be getting confused. All there saying is you can buy and shove just about anything you want in there. But to save you alot of headache stick with the 390. If a parts store doesnt want to sell you a 390 go to a different one. There appears to be some difference in the factory performance between years and models thats the whole VIN# and year comments. Research Research.
