Look behind the alternator on the side of the block for the block casting number. That should narrow it down to mabye two or three choices. Then, measure the stroke by pulling a spark plug and inserting a wooden dowel into the cylinder. With a breaker bar on the big balancer nut, spin the engine over so the piston is at the bottom of it's stroke. Mark your dowel at a spot that's constant, like the bottom of the valve cover. Then rotate the engine until the piston is at the top of it's stroke, mark your dowel, and measure the distance between the two marks. A 352/360 has a stroke of 3.5", a 390 has a stroke of 3.78, and a 410/428 has a stroke of 3.98".

I don't think the D8TE fits with the head casting code you gave. Could that casting code be "D3TE"

Sounds like you have a heavy duty or FT block with some of the most common FE heads made. They put these heads on 360s, 390s and 428s. The only two ways to tell exactly what you have is to measure the stroke or pull the oil pan and interpret the casting number.
