i parked my 79 f150 4spd manual and then came back out and it wouldnt budge out of gear. when i start it the clutch will engage and disengage and run in 2nd gear. it loads in from the top with the ball at the bottom of the stick, and has the two pins on each side. i cant figure out how to get the pins out to try and pull out the stick, if thats even where i need to start. any help is appreciated. thanks
I may be wrong but I think you have a np-435 tranny. Mine did the same and it wound up being the 1st gear synchronizer. I had a friend at at tranny shop pull it. The shifter had to be removed to do this but I'm not sure how he removed the pin.It may be just as simple as using a punch of the right size.
I'm sure others here will be more knowlegable, but thats my thoughts.
You don't need to remove the pins to remove the shift lever, all the pins do is retain the twist off cap (B8T-7220-D) that holds the lever in place. Put trans in neutral, push down on the cap, twist a 1/4 turn, off comes the cap. The cap may be buggered (common) from being improperly removed before.
On the shift forks are four plastic inserts. Two on first/second fork, two on third/fourth fork. When the plastic inserts snap off, trans locks up in gear. Besides new inserts, you'll need a gasket set also.
All these parts are available from Ford.

When you push down on that cap, you really have to PUSH! It is spring loaded. You might take a pair of channel lock (water pump) pliers, gently grab the top edge, push, then twist clockwise IRC.
one more thing, any idea on where i could find a diagram online of the stick and fork/fork inserts. not really sure what im looking at. thanks again
You can buy a CD copy of the 1973/79 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog from hipoparts.com. There are several members here that have the catalog on a CD, and may be able to post a pic for you.
The reference is: Illustration Section: 70.4 Page 7.
I can't do it, as I'm using Ford microfiche slides.
