First of all, I want to apologize because the engine I am asking about is in a '85 Lincoln Town Car. But it is a Ford product, and everyone at FTE has been awesome in helping me with my F250. So I was hoping it would be OK to ask about the Lincoln's engine here since this could probably happen in a Ford pickup too. Thank you.
With that said, the Lincoln has a Throttle Body injected 302, and the problem I am having is when going uphill on a long grade at highway speeds. It will start up the hill fine, but then I think I hear a little pinging right before the engine starts 'coughing'. The engine kind of cuts out with a pop sound, which jerks the car. It seems like it might be a fuel delivery problem. It returns to normal shortly over the summit of the hill.
I have replaced the fuel filter, and ran a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner through it too when I would gas it up. I even tried Premium gas. But none of that helped. Any suggestions ?? Thank you.
That's a classic symptom of fuel starvation in a carburetted car. It could be a weak fuel pump or a clogged filter "sock" in the gas tank fuel line pickup. I had a 1985 Crown Vic with a 351, but it had a carburettor.
I'm not sure how to check for fuel delivery with the fuel injection, but with the carb this is what I did:
Disconnect the fuel line and direct it into a clear bottle. Have someone start the engine and let it idle for a few seconds and watch the fuel flow. If it comes out in a good healthy stream then all is okay. If it just drips out, it's no good.
That sounds like a good place to continue. I don't know if it has a filter sock in the tank, but if it does, could I clear it by using an air compressor to blow the gas, then air back into the tank ? And would that still work if it's fuel pump is located in the gas tank ? Thanks.
2 bottles of heet and 2 bottles of iso heet, You need to use dedicated gas line dryer
don't replace any parts without giving this a shot for a couple of days.
