Problem with initial startup on rebuilt 302

I'm getting ready to start up my newly rebuilt 302, and am trying to crank the engine with the coil wire out to check the gauge for oil pressure.
I'm only hearing a click when i turn the key, starter does not crank engine and i noticed the battery terminals were a bit hot.
I only tried it twice cause dont know what is wrong.

Any ideas? My starter only has one wire connecting it, everything seems in it's place. Starter was working properly when i removed it a month ago to start the rebuild.

Cheers yall
alex

The battery is brand new, will check connections and wires today...
The click is coming from the relay i think.

Still can't find the problem!

I looked over all my connections in the engine compartment, especially at the relay, but can't figure this out. Nothing has been changed since the van last ran with the old engine, and i'm sure the starter cable is installed correctly, i even cleaned all the terminals with contact cleaner to remove any dirt.

Only a click at the relay happens when i attempt to crank the starter to check for oil.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried turning the engine over by hand ? (Breaker bar and 15/16" socket on the damper bolt)

go buy a new solinoid after you check the engine like Baddad said....

and you should prime the engine with a drill not the starter........

i've already primed with drill, just checking for oil pressurre on gauge by cranking without spark wires...
I loosened the starter bolts and shook it a bit, though maybe the gears weren't lockd-in right, still making click...
I know it's something small and obvious, will have more time tomorrow..
Thanx for all your advice

It probably is. Had the same problem. Turned out the bare connector on the starter wire to the starter was in contact with my header.

ok, here goes:

Still same problem, checked all wires again, battery tested, still a click from what sounds like the relay...
There is no solenoid in this ignition system, 1979 ford, just one wire from the relay to the starter.
Starter connection with driveplate is good, gears not locked up...
All parts (relay, starter,etc...)were functioning before tear-down and rebuild.

Just my .02, but did you take the battery connections completely off? I know in the past I've had this problem and I just wiggled the connection and sure they were nice an tight and clean but it still wouldn't start. So take the connections off the posts and hit the posts and inside the connnections with some rough sandpaper or a wire brush for cleaning battery posts and cables, or you could just use your pocket knife and scrape the posts and inside the connectios to get them kind of shiney and reconnect them. It has worked for me in the past twice.

What do you mean there is no soliniod? that thing on the fender well with the big red wire that goes down to the starter, that is a ford starter soliniod! they can just take a **** on you without any warning! Listen! take a set of jumper cable's and connect one to the positive battery post, now take the other end of it and touch it to the big red wire coming from the starter, that is called jumping the soliniod? if that starter does not turn, then you have a problem with that starter, if it does turn, then you eather have some wires wrong or a bad soliniod! are you sure you got those small wires that go to the small posts on the soliniod right? make sure you have the right one on the start side of it, its the one marked with an S for start, this is so simple I cant beleive that you cant figure it out? ford could'nt have made it any easier

Ok .....get a test light and turn the key like you were starting it and hold it. Put the test light on the starter wire right at the relay or solinoid (same thing) ...the side that goes to the starter...if you have power the relay or solinoid is good. if you have no power on the starter side of the (relay solinoid) RAP IT WITH A HAMMER WHILE SOMEONE HOLDS IT IN THE START POSITION.........

Did he ever try turning the crank by hand ? If a bad starter was the problem, just the tell-tale smoke rising from the starter wire's insulation is a dead giveaway.
