New to the forum and looking at a 91 XLT 302 auto short box. As far as I can tell tell the 97000 miles are actual. I was wondering if there are any tell tale marks that I could use to determine if this is accurate. I have no reason to suspect other than I am suspicious by nature. Everything looks good on first inspection. The brake pedal is worn through on the corner, but the corner is the only part that looks worn. The gas appears worn but appropriate. Is this a red flag that the mileage is wrong or can they wear like that under 100k.
Any other tell tale marks? Is there some sort of marker on the odometer that indicates when it flips? Is there a code in the computer that indicates this? Thanks in advance for the info. Hopefully I will be reading this forum for entertainment in the near future.
No, not really any way to tell with the stupid *** 5 digit odometer. You might get something from a CARFAX report, but no promises. That brake pedal pad ususally wears out pretty easily, but once it's worn through in the corner, it doesn't get much worse - it could've been like that for awhile. If i really wanted to find out, i'd go with the carfax report and do a compression check on the cylinders.
My clutch pedal pad was worn almost smooth at 108K when I bought it and it's only slightly worse now at 216K. I've got another 95 F-150 with ~321K on it and the pad is barely worn. It's all in the driver. There's no way to be absolutely sure without knowing the last owner or having service records, as some trucks with under 100K can be in much worse shape than others with over 300K.
Look underneath and see if you can tell if the transmission has been out or replaced. Original (non-greasable) u joints and ball joints usually get replaced between 100 and 200K. The engine will probably have signs of work done to it or needing it if it's really 197K (radiator hoses, water pump, valve cover gaskets, fixed vacuum lines, etc.).
Welcome to FTE. My truck has only 102k (confirmed because I've got a 6 digit ODO) miles and the brake pedal is heavily worn on the corner. I wouldn't use that as an indicator for mileage. If you're in an emissions county then CARFAX should provide pretty accurate odometer readings for every time the truck got smogged.
