Hey bookum1,
Think before you act on the y-pipe. I just put mine on 2 weeks ago. I used the one from ebay. Really nice pipe, nice welds, fit up nice, and deffinetly works. But the flutter is way bad. Sounds like a diesel inside my truck from 2k rpm until about 4400 unless you get out of it. Even at light to medium throttle when 2000 rpm gets there you hear it. You can also feel it inside the truck on the passenger floor board.
Your truck may be different though. I have 2004 F-250 SD, Crew Cab Long bed, AT, 3:73 gears and otherwise stock exhaust. I am about ready to pull the y-pipe back out and replace with a stock one unless there is a better fix for the noise & vibration.

Just my .02

Really annoying huh stumpy2. At least Stan told me there was going to be a flutter type sound with his pipe. Mine is in the 1800-2200 rpm range. The e-bay guy says in an around about way his doesn't make a flutter sound, "Ford installed these restriction points as an attempt to silence the exhaust flutter issue. This Y Pipe was specially designed and tested as a more efficient fix for the problem. Other Y's may not have the same results."
The only fix I know of his return to factory or a set of headers with an included y-pipe, ie. Thorley, Banks. I have been thinking of going back to stock for now.

I installed the E-bay Y-pipe a couple of weeks ago I haven't noticed a "Flutter" but I didn't get it welded good enough so I have a couple of leaks that are noticeable. I bought the stainless version, I fit it one night and my buddy tig-welded it the next. It got late so we had to quit for the night. We're supposed to finish it this week. I don't know what the flutter sounds like. But I know my noise is a leak.

so...... I have tryed to read as much on this y-pipe thing. can someone put this whole thing in a nut shell for me? 2001 V -10 all stock will the y-pipe off e-bay be worth the money with a stock muffer? also you guys talk about a updated y-pipe at the ford dealer? can I still get that for my 2001? trying to get the best bang for the buck! in the end I would still like it some what quite and a little more power. Thanks Todd

Yes really annoying......to me and everybody else that has rode in the truck since. Mine is close to the same as yours when it starts, 1900 rpm or so up until you let out of it. At light/steady throttle it isnt bad. But cruising down the highway you can still hear it, and its worse when you come to some big hills and have to dip into the gas to hold your speed. I can just imagine listening & feeling that all the time when the camper is hooked up.

I have been thinking going to stock again also. Has anybody tried putting dual exhaust on the V-10? Does it help or hurt? I even thought about running duals back to a single muffler, wonder if that would move the sound to the rear or help eliminate the "flutter" as it has alot farther to travel down the exhaust before they join up.

Open to suggestions anyway. Thanks.

Any exhaust you put on is not going to change the flutter, its in the y-pipe. You could put on a loud muffler that will help drown out some of it but you'll more than likely get drone. Your options are back to stock y-pipe or go to aftermarket headers/y-pipe. You will get increase noise from the headers over the thick cast manifolds but it isn't flutter.

I drove my dads truck today with the ebay y-pipe on it and it does have a small amount of flutter however its hard to hear over his very loud exhaust. I have yet to experience any flutter both empty and pulling with the Thorley headers on my 04'. I thought I'd get some flutter but I havn't heard any, and I have a somewhat quiet FM70 exiting the stock location.
