I have a 1996 F250 I recently bought. It has one key and looks like the original. The problem is this key does not open the doors but it would turn the ignition until yesterday. It started getting very difficult to turn (Hanging up or something). From deduction I am assuming the key itself may be worn and thus causing the problem. Is there a way for Ford to order original keys? Never done it and never had to do it. But I dont want to just start changing out ignition switches and door locks when I could possibly solve the problem with new keys. I hope I have said that clearly enough. I was guessing if Ford had the VIN number they might be able to do this? Thanks Maxx
I know GM can cut keys from VIN. Not sure about Fords. its worth a call. Also if that doesn't fix it change that ignition lock cylinder out quickly as once it falls apart inside and you can't turn the key one you will spend hours drilling that thing apart to get it out!
The Ford dealer has a thing that measures key cuts. They can measure yours, and say they measure a 4&1/2 then they know that it should be a 5, just worn down. I'm also not sure about the VIN and keys.
Take it to a locksmith he should be able to cut a key for it. Ive taken my truck lock to get a new one and he made it work with my original key, ive also taken other locks to his shop that I no longer had a key for and he made me keys for them, so I dont see why they couldnt be able to cut you a key for your truck. Look in the phone books im sure there are a few locksmiths in there. Most are reasonable on there prices too my new lock for my truck was only 12.00. The others were just the price of the keys plus about a dollar or two for labor.
