Anyone out there ever applied rust bullet with a roller? Since buying a compressor to spray paint with is too expensive i was thinking i'd undercoat my truck bed with rust bullet and a roller. i hate to do it, but a 15 CFM compressor is way to much money for me.
I've brush painted parts of cars before. In fact I did some fairly extensive touching up on the F100 this summer with a brush. You still need to do a proper prep job, and its best to get a good brush. Apply the paint in one direction and don't overwork it. Keep in mind you can wet sand some of the "texture" out after its cured. I know a guy with an older Toyota winter beater work truck. Its a very respectable looking 10-20 footer with a full brush paint job.
The air compressor is 4.3 CFM and works dandy. The spray gun is $40.00 at Lowes. Just remember to have LOTS of acetone for cleanup and wear rubber gloves. RB soaks into your skin just like it soaks into the rust. There is no scrubbing it off your hands if you get it on. You have to wait for the skin to wear off on its own.
hey Mike, have you used the Black Shell product from RB? I'm shocked that it will spray nicely with only 4.3 cfm. I might rent a compressor and do it that way.
What is your overall opinion of RB by the way? I've never used it but everyone seems to like it alot. Have you ever had any rust come back?
No, I have not used the black shell. I typically topcoat with a rustoleum flat black and no, as long as the piece is properly prepped, I have not had any problems and in the areas I did have troubles, it was always due to poor prep. The spray issues are are either created or eliminated by the spraygun used. Using a gravity feed gun means as long as the stuff will flow, it will get to the spray nozzle eventually and you don't need massive volumes of air to effect the venturi principle. A second point would be that this is a smaller gun, designed to run on less air volume. It should be noted that when using a spray gun, it WILL take three coats, and there WILL be overspray. Don't do it around anything you don't want overspray on, because this stuff is a PITA to get off.
I understand, i've heard that stuff is wicked to get off. Have you ever used any other rust prevention products other than RB? One more question and i'll stop being annoying...lol
How much do you think i need to paint the underside of my 6 foot bed, including the inner and outer side walls?
