Black Soot

I just upgraded to a 4" exhaust and eliminated the catalytic converter , but now I have black soot forming on the lower right rear fender panel where the exhaust exits. The pipe is cut square. I never had this build-up before with the stock exhaust system. It was cut at an angle on exit. Is this why or am I experiencing some other problem ?

That's the beauty of a diesel. Add on a tip to get the exhaust farther away from the truck, out past the tire, or just wipe it off every now and then.

I get that soot too. It's because I tucked my exhaust pipe up very close to the panel (close enough to melt some of the plastic underneath). I had to because I go offroading, and I managed to screw up the stock tailpipe on a rock. No tip for me. I just try to keep it clean.

I don't have a tip either and I get a beautiful layer of soot. I like it. It's proof I wasn't dreaming when I saw the black in my passenger mirror!

Time to get that sticker that says "It's not pollution, it's horsepower!!" to let the non-power strokers know that everything is OK!

I am assuming the cat on the PSD is the same as on a mercedes. If it is, it's not a true catalytic converter but a partical or soot trap. Removing it would definitely explain your increased soot level leaving the tailpipe.

No particluate or soot trap on these trucks...not until the '08 6.4. The 6.4 is the first of the Super Duty trucks have a particulate trap.

I'm probaly totaly wrong, but does CA have/had diff emission specs on diesels, could a CA truck have a particluate or soot trap?

The CAT on a PSD is most certainly a soot trap! I bought my truck new in 1/99, drove empty for about 5 K miles, and then went fulltime and towed from Wash DC to RGV in TX, and removed my CAT to install a Banks exhaust and a US Gear exhaust brake. I could not see any light coming through the CAT with my powerful flashlight in one end. I banged the CAT on the floor and a big pile of soot came out. Banged it again an another pile came out. They guy said stop doing that your getting soot in the air and I can't breathe. I threw the CAT in the trash, so I never did find out just how much soot was in there.

Before I left the garage I'd gotten a Banks Stinger system installed, gauges, etc.., so it's hard to say how much improvement getting rid of the CAT made, but it was so full of soot it had to be hindering performance considerably.

Well Gene, you do have a point...the cat probably does trap some soot. However, I was referring to a specific piece in the exhaust designed exclusively to trap the particulate matter. Those didn't show up until '08. I don't think the cat was designed to remove the soot, but as a result of being in a sooty exhaust stream, the cat will catch some particulate matter on it's tiny internal passages. The new '08 trucks have both a cat and a particulate trap.

Also, there were a couple of years when Ford did not put a cat on the 7.3 and my 2000 is one of them. I think late 99-01 did not have a cat if I remember correctly.
