Cool No Heat

So I had a "completely sober" encounter with the concrete base of a CVS parking lot light post last spring. The radiator of the 2000 Explorer Limited broke as a result, and was completely replaced along with the other repairs.

I have EATC. My problem is, since the cold weather has come, the only way I get heat is to turn the push the temp setpoint to max @ 90 degrees, and even then, just a trickle comes through. I try to turn the fan up, it gets colder.

I've read several of the posts that suggest the following among other things:

1) Check coolant level - It's at the cold line when I start it in the a.m., but it's somewhat brownish-green, and I'm not sure if taht's normal.
2) Check hoses coming through firewall - Looking at the rear of the vehicle after driving for some 1.5 hours, the one on the left is hot, the one to the right is cooler, or barely warm.

Asked my mechanic before I checked out the forum and the results above, and he said the easy ($80) fix would be to acid flush the heater core; otherwise if that didn't work, the $500 repair would need the dash to be pulled and the whole system something or the other'ed.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

two things come to mind, first is do you have hot water circulating thru the heater core. you say one side is hot and one is luke warm. probably need to do a little more checking and determine how "hot" the hoses are compared to the radiator hose. if one side is hot and one is cold, it dont sound like you have any flow. take the hoses off and put the garden hose on one side and flushe out the core.-- im assuming the motor does not overheat and therefore the water pump is putting out adequate flow. check the radiator hoses and see where they connect to the motor-- are they in the righ spot and not kinked?
------- last, there is a blend door inside the duct that mixes the hot and cold air to get the temp you want. if it breaks then you get all hot or all cold. thats a possibility, if the water system is good.

Thanks Steve and Auanaut20. Looks like that will be my weekend project. The engine does not overheat.

anyone know if the 2000 has the same blend door as the 97ish ones? if it is the newer style then there have been a lot of other people here that report that it is the servo motor that controls it that goes bad. Might be worth checking that.

Also, doesn't the EATC system have a diagnostic you can run? might be worth doing that as well.
