[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Oct-02 AT 05:45 PM (EST)]My 1993 has been diagnosed as needing valve stem seals. It gives off a big puff of blue smoke on first start and build up on the plugs indicate this problem. How difficult is this for a do it yourselfer? Any special tools required?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Oct-02 AT 01:57 AM (EST)]Not difficult at all- BUT you will have to remove upper intake. Go to Auto Zone, rent an on-engine valve spring compressor(make sure it's a new one), and have at it. I usually take a length of clothsline rope, and feed it into the cyl. I am working on, then crank that piston as close to tdc as I can. If the head wasn't rebuilt, now would be a good time to replace springs and keepers. Be VERY CAREFUL not to drop a valve down into cyl- you will have to pull off the head. If you need more help, let me know, and I can send you a more detailed e-mail.
Maybe it doesn't even have valve stem seals in it. I offer that in jest, but I have heard (on another mechanic site) that someone had an engine that the rebuilders didn't even put in the valve stem seals. Just left them out. At 10k miles, you wouldnm't expect that, maybe at 100k.
But I had a Oldsmobile that did the same thing, alot of blue smoke on start up, turns out alot of crude clogged up the oil drain hole on one of the heads. So the oil would just pool and seep into a couple of cylinders. But then again, the 300 has some large drain holes. And there are some additives that supposedly restore valve stem seals.
Let's not compare real engines to chebbys right now. A lot of 300's have this problem because of oil additives. People run that high mileage oil or whatever, and it cracks the seals. I have seen engines with well over 350,000 miles that didn't burn a drop, and 40,000 mile ones that blew a cloud. The seals are just umbrella types, and all it takes is a little crack to make them leak.
