Odd problem, Injector Pump?

On cooler mornings (+-60) my truck starts up just fine, runs only slightly rough for 2-3 seconds then smooths out. After a few minutes it will start to rev out a little and then bog like it is starving for fuel, I pump the throttle a little and after a moment smooths out. This doesn't seem to happen until I actually put the truck in gear and start driving. Then it happens sometimes in 2nd or 3rd gear. Runs great the rest of the day after the motor has warmed properly. Has a fresh fuel filter and the injectors are maybe 3 years old. Ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like air in the system.....
visit... http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi.htm look for the filter and system air leaks.

Check the manual lift pump ......

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.

Hasn't done it for 3 or 4 mornings now. Is air something that can work out of the system on its own? Can the lift pump temporarily act up? Thanks.

It can and will work itself out yes... unless there is a continued air leak point somewhere in the system.....

Where is that lift pump located and can it be the source of the air?

Other question, my Injection Pump is leaking fuel, maybe on start up, not sure. Puddling on top of the intake manifold. Time for a new one? The truck will hesitate (surge) at high rpm when I am really on the throttle for hard acceleration. Has done that for a long time, so I just don't go there. Though it is fun to lay the black cloud on the joggers!

Follow the line that leaves the filter headed down outside the engine.
The lift pump is at the lower end.

If your IP is leaking fuel out, it can also leak air in.

So is that to say it is more likely the IP, especially with the symptoms I have given?

usually if the ip is leaking it will leak at the weep hole ... located at the bottom of the neck behind the mounting flange. make a wipe from paper towel and run it beneath the flange. you may also be getting air intrusion from the return tees or leaking from the weep hole in the lift pump (same location as older type gas fuel pump on the side of the engine).
not going to say it is the ip til further checking is done and all else is eliminated. start cheap.

Disable glow plugs?

Also kindly, to disable the glow plugs, which wire is the ignition to relay that needs to be unhooked?

Would you say simply that a leaking IP needs to be replaced and can the layman do it? Looks a little complex with the timing issues and all.

Lift pump, filter and lines are all dry.

been searching all over the forums for this info... not finding it.

I want to disable my glow plugs so they are not draining my battery while I do a compression test... guess ill just start pulling wires till the controller dont click.

If you have the '87 and later system, your glow plug relay has 2 small terminals. Pull the wires off of either of these, and the relay won't close...
