Okay, I set out this morning for a nice simple job of taking off the oilpan on my '87 F250 (I was going to replace the oil pump). I'd never done this before on a Ford, but descriptions on this forum of how to do it and the same methods described in the Haynes manual made it sound like a piece of cake. I jacked up the engine, got it on 1" blocks under the motor mounts, got the crank out of the way, dropped the oil pickup, and nothing. The pan will not come out; it lacks at least 3/4" to 1" to clear the bell housing. I jacked the engine up some more (as far as I can get it) and got 1.5" blocks under it. It didn't help.
Has anyone got some hints on how to get this thing off the truck? Also, why didn't the procedures described several places work? Was there an extra-large oilpan made for some of these trucks? Were there different size bell housings?
I hope some of you have some hints as to what I can try to get this out. I'm all out of ideas and ready to take the ballpeen hammer to it.
I chagned the oilpan gasket on my F150 a few months ago. I had to jack the engine up about 2" and the rear of the trans up as far as it would go to get the pan out. I was still a fight, but I won.
I disconnected the tranny mount bolts, slid it forward a little and lifted a bit more and got it out. just watch your shifter and cables to avoid damage.
Thanks to both of you for your help. Jacking the trans. up did the job. When I wrote in asking for help, I had already loosened up the trans. bolts hoping it would help in trying to raise the engine, but I hadn't thought of putting a jack under it. Five minutes after reading your messages, the oilpan was out.
Also, that is if you haven't already found out. Be right careful on gasket placement and adherance. It took me a couple of goes the first time to make it oil tight with that furshligginer four piece gasket.
When I replaced the pan on my 94 I6 4X4 the book did not give enough infomation. Like Remove the Trans mount bolts and the ERG vaule from the intake manfoulds. If you have a Cherry Picker or 4" block instead of the 2" block. Raise the motor and trans as high as it can go with out breaking anything. This will give you just enough room to get the pan out and in. I still wonder how Ford did it the way the book said. Or if it is time to change your Clutch do it all in one shot.
Watch the wiper motor when you jack up the engine as the EGR valve hitts it if the engine is jacked up too far and they are a pain to replace as well as costly.
