My build

Ok I bought a 1977 F250 4x4 highboy that I found when searching adds on the internet. I stumbled a crossed FTE and searched the classifieds on here and found a truck in PA. So I emailed the guy my offer not even sure if it was for sale any more since it was posted for over four months. I got the truck for 3500 not bad for the condition of my new truck. Ok so it needs a little body work to feel in some minor rust holes. It no longer has the original motor this I know because the help you guys gave me decoding the VIN. It now has a 410 FE motor with a 4 speed manual and NP 205 transfer case Danna 44 HD front axle and Danna 60 rear. So my plan is to do most of the body work on my own with the final paint done by a buddy of mine. Where I'm at with this project is buying parts to get every thing the way I want it.

Dual tanks on driver side bought from Aero Tanks with shipping and hard ware I spent about $800.

Replacement wiring harness from Blue Oval Truck Parts $500.

After market gauges and panel $450 from Blue Oval Truck parts.

Race seats from Jegs $400 for the pair

Seat brackets and 4 point restraints $170 from summit racing.<ST1</ST1

Center console/Jump seat summit racing $135

Weather stripping from Bronco grave yard $135

Miscellaneous rubber from JCwhitney $300

Body mount kit from jcwhitney $200

35-12.50-16.5 Mickey Thompson tires found on Ebay $653

Eaton Springs front and rear springs with bushings and shackles $1300

So all that equates to a stack of parts and a lot of work to get done. First on the list is to remove the bed and do all the rust repair then sand blast prime and install under coating which will be bed liner sprayed on the under side of the body and wrap up to the first body line for protection against stone chipping and tree branch scratches. Then modify bed for dual tanks. After that I will remove the cab and strip out all plastic and glass entire truck will be done in grey with black trim and accents starting with the interior. While the body is off the frame will be getting blasted primed and coated with bed liner or rubber paint coating. Then the suspension will get installed. Ok so next to purchase is the headers and dual exhaust.

Ok so far out of my $15,000.00 I have spent $8,548.00 That was my budget to do the entire truck fifteen thousand. I will start doing pictures as this thing gets going but with me working on the road and only working on the truck a few days each month it will be slow. Mike <O</O<O</O

Any one have suggestions on filling in the hole where the in cab gas tank used to be? I'm trying to determine if I should just replace the cab or weld a patch in? The other thing I don't like is the marker lights I think they will just allow water to get in the cab.

what condition is the drivetrain in? Engine, tranny, t-case, diffs, drivshafts. I would check them out first as they might east into your budget and time before you add the goodies. Just my 2cents.

Does it have the divorced transfer case too?

If your cab mounts are good, I would put a patch panel in for the former filler location, if the cab mounts are rotten, I'd replace the cab. New rubber can be made or purchased for the roof lights, if they have been leaking the roof will be rusty or will rust out quickly. This might also make you want to find another cab.

I figured around 15K for my build on a same 77 F250 highboy and come to find out, I'm going to be well over that. Of course, I started from ground up taking out each and every part until there was not bolt to take out. Anyway, hope the budget works for ya and can't wait to see some pics of your build. Definately post some pics of your fuel tanks. I'm going to get the rear tank, but would like to see the aux tank because I aquired a duel tank bed and would really like to set something up.

Well I'm sure my build will end up costing me a bit more but I should have a decent tax return end of the year bonus and such so it will cost me about twenty thousand toatal I guess. And the drive line seems to be in good shape but the parking brake cables will need replaced for inspection purposes so that will be like another $300
Plus later on down the road I want to put a danna 60 under the front end.

That is another decision to make keep my old bed or buy a panel with the dual filler holes? Was just thinking about waiting till income tax return and then calling up mikes truck salvage and getting another cab and dual tank bed.

I spent about $18K on my competition mud truck, if you don't count the fibreglass body, that was pretty spendy, about $10K just on that...www.usbody.com

Well I checked out that fiberglass body and I'm sure it would look good but I think I prefer metal around me not fibers of crap flying if I was ever in an accident. And the bed is real attractive but will it take a beating like the metal bed? I would think it to be crack proned but not sure. With metal you deal with rust fiberglass you deal with cracking so what is better? to me it is metal!

On the fuel cell the set up I bought mounts between the bed side and frame rail. It bolts to the inside of the bed.
I also fore got that I ordered a new grill shell and incert along with fenders and inner fenders so there is about another $600

Ok a few more parts to the pile of parts. Winch from EBAY Ramsey 9500LB 5HP shipped $378, headers from Bronco Grave Yard $189 shipped, additional seat brackets and hardware I needed $122 shipped from Bronco Grave Yard. Ok now I will probably be getting a divorce because I'm always gone for work but hey it's all good now I can build a nice garage/workshop LOL!

I thought the same thing... then I used the stuff... it doesn't crack, this is the absolute premium in fibreglass, it doesn't dent, rust, and its at least as sturdy as the metal, this stuff is 3/8" thick.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to sell you on it, just merely noting that I spent a lot before anything was even painted...

If you get a new bed remember the highboy frames are narrower at the rear then on the rest of the trucks from this era. So your bed bolt holes wont line up. And cmprice Aussie doesnt make a locker for the dana 60 yet.
