Surging during acceleration

Surging during acceleration
Help help. 04 F150 FX4 5.4 3V.
I need help with this guys. I recently took a 250 mile trip with my F150. My very reliable truck started acting up. The truck surges on accelleration but will hold speed when driving on level ground. From a dead stop the truck bucks and surges when you mash the accelerator.
I changed the fuel filter with no chnage. With an old time mechanical fuel pump I would suspect it to be not delivering enough fuel. Don't know what to check next. No check engine lite, no codes.
