My '90 f-150 has a odd sounding exhaust leak. it will only leak when it breaks a certain pressure. if i take it easy on the gas in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear, i won't hear it. however if i lean into it or i am in 4th anf 5th i hear it. it sound like a rapid ticking noise, and it does not seem to be anything mechanical. could it be the exhaust manifold is cracked? or maybe the gasket? any help would be appreciated.
Had a similar sound on my '93 and it turned out to be a tube from the air pump to the exhaust. Fixed it with liquid steel and a hose clamp as it looked like an expensive part part from the dealer.
Ok, I'm having a similar problem. A tapping noise. Just started yesturday morning. If I'm easy its not loud but if I push it it gets louder. I thought maybe it was a stuck lifter or something but I'm gonna go check my exhaust now.
Just checked and my tapping noise seems to be definately coming from somewhere behind or under the exhaust manifold. Haven't pin pointed the exact location yet as I don't know my way around that area too much. Still looking. I do have a metal "hose" thats covered in a woven fabric running from the exhaust manifold over the enging itself and coming down on the other side and to a round metal thing that connects in. The fabric hose is warn and frayed in several spots. And the tapping seems to be coming from that general direction. Would it be a problem to cut the worn fabric off? I mean its already got holes in it, I just don't wanna screw anything up even more. Oh the fabric is very loose too.
It's fiberglass insulation to protect all the plastic hoses nearby from the heat of the exhaust that sometimes flows thru it - it's the EGR pipe. Leave it alone unless the ticking is exhaust blowing out of a hole in the tube, in which case you could JB Weld the hole shut using the fiberglass to keep the JB from running while it dries.
