My F150 exhaust seems rather quiet when I first start it up, but after it gets warmed up good, the exhaust is much louder (which I like). I started wondering if I had a crack up front that widened out when it got hot, so looked under it when I got home today with it hot and still idling, but didn't see any cracks. Also I did not hear any noise like a leak. All sound was coming from the side exit pipe.
So... what is the phenomenon that would cause this? I really don't like it when it is quieter, but suppose it's a blessing as it lets me get out of the neighborhood quietly at 7:30 am, so I don't wake the neighbors.
Hmm, that is strange. My exhaust is actually louder when shes cold, then it levels out once she gets warmed up...It could be your muffler, depending on what kind it is. If it is packed kind, it may need to get warmed up and loosened up before the sound can ecscape, or same deal with chamber muffler, colder air doesnt move as fast as warmer air, so it is not going to be as loud. Just a guess
Yeah, I remember the stock muffler, which I had drilled holes in the back plate (still in my gallery) to make it louder, would be louder on startup. But most are about the same cold or hot. Maybe there is crack somewhere. Anyway, I like it, so guess I leave well enough alone. Oh maybe it's that I don't put too much pedal into a cold engine. Hey, that might explain it. You know, not to push a cold engine too hard. lest you make an oil burner out of it. Still, I don't think that fully explains it. One thing for sure, it sounds so good that when warmed up I can't keep my foot out of it. Fuel mileage is worse now with the new muffler. But I'm having a blast, so who cares.
No packing in this muffler. Just three 2.25" ID tubes in a turbo style setup. Nice fora $25 muffler. Won't last long, maybe 2 years, but hey, then I can try something louder, like maybe the Flowtech Terminator !
