I just got a 2wd ext cab Ranger theother day...It has a few issues...
1st. both rear 1/2 doors are stuck and will not open. The upper opens, but the lower will not unlatch...Any ideas?
2nd. I noticed that the truck is not sitting straight. It is 1.5 inches higher on the passanger side...it had shocks redone 10K ago...The previous owner was 6'6 and over 300lbs...could that have anythig to do w it? I think it needsspings 140K onit now
3rd I get a "thunk" in the front end going over small bumps and cracks in the road. Front end was rebuilt 30K ago....uppers,lowers,links and tie rods. Shocks all around 10K ago
4th. My gas gage neelde goes from 1/2 to empty when going up and down hills

I seem to remember certain years/models having a kit to make the truck not sit lopsided. Some plate was installed upside down originally or something. I'm sure others have details.

When I had a thunk in the front end it was the sway bar. The drop links had broken, and it would thunk against something whenever one wheel hit a good size bump while he other didn't.

I realized why this was when I removed my fuel pump/float assembly. The assembly is somewhere in the front to middle of the fuel tank, but the float reaches toward the rear. If you go uphill, the gas rolls to the rear and the float goes up. If you go downhill, then just the opposite. I've noticed it can sway a good deal, but mine is usually around (+-1/8 tank versus the +-1/4 tank that you reported).

The cable that goes in the latch is probably disconnected. PITA to put back. One of mine is like that. I just slide my finger in there and pull the cable to open the door.
I thought it was the cable too....I used a set of plyers to grab the cable at the handle. I figured it might be strecthed or something. However, pulling on it did not work. So, I am still at square one with these doors.
