Need some help. My son has an 1988 Ford F150 4x2 PU with in-lne 6 with about 135K miles. The rig has been sitting unused for 2 years. The unit runs and my son did a tune up (plugs, wires, all filters, rotor, dist.cap, etc.) When we went to pass Massachusetts emissions test the rig failed the NOX test. The limit is 3.50 and the truck came in at 4.67 .
Need some guidence where I should look first to fix this issue?? Anything quick and easy? What's the most probable area that's causing this issue? What's the chances that the cat. converter could be bogus??? Anything a back yard mechanic like me can fix or replace???
it won't throw a code for egr. Try pulling the egr valve off the engine (should be on throttle body) and see if it is all plugged up. If it is, clean or replace it. Also, wait for a good dry day to test it. Damp weather makes it more likely to fail NOX.
