I've got a '72 302 in a '66 F-100, which is making a mysterious knocking. It used to happen sometimes when cold, but not always... more erratically than anything, but has recently begun to happen constantly warm or cold. It almost sounds like it is the timing chain slapping the cover? However I changed the chain about a year ago and it is still happening, and there were no makings inside the cover. The fuel pump is new aswell. Oil pressure is decent and there are no filings or metal sludge in the oil, oil is getting to the rockers too.
My thought is that the oil pump is going bad, but have never heard one make this sound. I thought it may have spun a bearing but the knock is different, and no filings in oil. Any ideas?
i've got a knocking sound in my 79 302 and can't figure it out either. mine's not erratic like that but it's louder under load and not audible or nonexistant when she's hot.
just wanted to say good luck because i don't have a clue...
