I have a 79 bronco with a 400m 4sp, 159,000 miles..Been a great truck! For the last year I have been fighting a knock in the engine. It started shortly after I put a timing chain set and oil, water and fuel pumps on it. It sounds pretty heavy, not a ping or value chatter. It only happens when you give it gas and rev it up to 1500 to 2000 rpms, then you get a knock knock knock. You drive it out on the road, every shift of course knock, knock knock. If you travel at 45 to 55 mph, on the gas it knocks, off the gas slowing down - no knocking. Just idling no knocking and runs so smooth.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o></o> Replaced..main bearings, second timing set, high volume oil pump, lifters, push rods...and no metal in the oil pan.<o></o>
Forgot to mention once I put on a "new" fuel pump that knocked what a pain that was tracking down listen around with a broom handle to your ear at various places on your engine to try and isolate the area its coming from.
Also got a 65 supersport once with a crate motor 350 installed to a two speed power glide and the guy swore that his new motor had a rod knock, found that he forgot to tighten the torque converter bolts!!!!!
Got that car for nearly nothing over a simple oversight.
So look around for some of the easy simple things first and then check again.
Bought a project car once with a knock, only knocked at idle, turns out the crank was split. Fortunatlely it did not destory the 396 block. 22 years later and one restoration still have both.
