I still havent had time to actually work on putting my chip in, (freakin combine just had to break down), but was thinking about what coonhunter told me last night. Yall talk about putting the chip in the pcm, but the actual pcm is in the engine compartment. I havent looked under my dash yet in but is there some plug down there that yall are calling the pcm or that leads to the pcm. like I said I still havent had time to look at it yet so I'm really just thinking outloud here.
The way I understand, our trucks (1997) have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) under the passenger-side kick panel. It can't handle the underhood heat that is generated when the engine is operating.
There are fuse boxes on the driver-side of the engine compartment. Are you referring to these?
No I am referring to the metal box that is bolted up right behind the fuse box. my truck was built in May 1997 so its not like its an early model. also all data and mitchell both say that the pcm is right where I am talking about.
on the inside of the fender on the driver side there IS a metal box, but that is the IDM i think you're referring to. in order to access the PCM to plug the chip into, you need to remove the plastic kick panel to the left of the pedals and also unbolt the emergency brake pedal. behind this you will see the PCM. im sure someone has pictures. if not, i will try to get some for you tomorrow evening when i get home from school.
FFemt5287 is correct. The PCM is behind the ebrake (which is held on by three bolts). If you look under the hood at the fire wall below the master cylinder, next to the left (drivers) fender, you will see the electircal connection for the PCM. Take the connector off (two bolts) unplug the connector, remove the screws that hold up the fender well liner, pry down on the liner, then slide the PCM forward and out. You now need to clean the contacts on the plug on the rear of the PCM (under a rubber plug). I like to take the PCM cover off and use a Scotch Brite pad and a small flat headed screw driver to clean the connector (it has varnish on it). Clean both sides of the connector. Replace the PCM, hook it back up, remove the kick panel and ebrake, then plug your chip in. Replace everything and your done.
