I have heard that an MSD 6a ignition box seems to be an ideal way to help wake up the inline 6 a bit for some power. Is this an easy thing to install? If not, would anyone care to give any pointers or advice to make the install go smoother? Is there anything else like wiring harness, plug wires, etc, that I would need to also buy to run this ignition box? Thanks!!!
Go to http://www.msdignition.com/ down load the instructions for the 6 series. On page 19 there's a couple of diagrams for the TFI setup. I think fordsix has the same exact diagrams in their tech section. It wasn't that difficult on my truck, my complaint is that the leads are a little short. I had to lengthen all of them to do a clean install. I noticed a difference over the stock setup, but it wasn't some shocking experience. I do notice my truck starts up a lot easier and rev's smoother. After five months I have had no problems - normal plug, cap, and rotor wear. Buy the harness, it makes the conversion easier - especially if you think you'll ever take it out.
Thanks Whittey. What is a TFI-IV adapter? Also, you mentioned theres splicing involved. Can the splicing be avoided by also buying a wiring harness? I thought I heard theres a wiring harness available to avoid any splicing. TIA
Well, the only one i've done recently was a mix between TFI-IV, DII and Crane, all without any engine harnesses. So everythign there was splicing. With a straightup TFI-IV for the sake of ease, get the TFI-IV adapter kit and follow the instructions. I can't see it being very hard at all.
