78 F-250 project

someone had installed a 429 in this 4x4,using poor welding skills. Not knowing the overall condition of this engine,I would like to install my 460 D9TE.The 429 #DIVE A2B.I need to know if I can use the bell housing and flywheel from the 429,I realize there may be issues with internal/external balance. My 460 is setup with automatic trans.I do have a few other motors in the yard,a 360/390 with standard trans, and a 351/400 with automatic still in a parts truck. Also the 460 is in a 79 F250 2 wheel drive, will those motor mounts work in the 4x4.

Actual topic in the title please

The title should have read:early 429 to later 460 crank to trans fitment

From what I remember the 429 and early 460's cranks had a smaller pilot hole and because of that required a special Torque Convertor from the car.

The later 460's had a larger pilot hole.

Yes,

Because no there no 460's w/std trans until 1984.. you will need the flywheel for a 390 for the early 429 or

Or the flywheel from an 84+ truck application to match the later 460.

351M/400/429/460 all share the same bellhousing pattern.

IIRC, the best "gathering parts option" is a bell-housing from a 351M/400 and the correct flywheel.

Having a 80's donor truck is the best option

all I would really need then is the later model flywheel and maybe some motor mounts I guess ,you're telling me the 429 bell housing will bolt right on the 460 block.I think the clutch that was in there was 11", are the ones that go with the later model 460 12" assemblies?

The 2wd motor mounts will not work in the 4WD unless you had the advanced adapters 460 swap mount kit, or they butchered your towers to make the 2WD mounts work. Take a picture, chances are they used the passenger car mounts, which are rectangular ish, and about 7" long by 3" tall

Lincoln, tuna boat, and Boss '9 motor mount.

2WD truck motor mount

L&L motor mount swap mounts, (these are the trans dapt copies, and are urethane)
