I have a 87 350 with a 460 in it now that has seen better days. Will any year 460 work in it or do I need to get one that is from the 80's? I just want somthing that I can put in with out doing any mods. Just bolt it in and go. I have a 5 speed in the truck if that makes any differance. Thanks.
The '79 and later 460 (D9TE) are externally balanced whereas '78 and earlier models are internally balanced. So they use a different flexplate/flywheel. The early motors use a neutral-balance whereas later motors require the imbalance to counter the crankshaft, and use a weighted spacer on the front (as opposed to a neutral spacer on older engines).
Pretty easy and inexpensive to change those things though I suppose.

The break is actually midyear 1979, so a 1979 460 engine could be either. The early 460's don't have a weighted spacer behind the vibration damper, the later 460's do.
