I currently have a 1980 F250 4x4 that somebody dropped a 460 in. It has a o/d automatic transmission and IFS. I also have a 1976 F250 4x4 with no engine, a solid front axle, and a divorced t-case. I am looking to build a pulling truck and I don't know which would be a better setup. Both have 3.73 rear ends, so that is a non-factor. I have heard the solid front axle will hold up better and the t-case would allow me to put a manuel tranny in it. Any suggestions would be helpful. Also I didn't know where to post this, so if you can redirect me to a better forum that would be great.
Which truck are you planning on building? Sounds like you are leaning towards installing most of the early truck stuff under the late truck chassis.I believe simply installing the 460 in the early truck would put you many days ahead, by not having as much work to do.
You probably have a D44 front axle under the earlt truck, and you should verify which t-case is under the truck too. You may have a NP203, full time unit that will need some attention.
All just a matter of how much work you are willing to do.
