I did this a long time ago, but recently someone asked if my truck came this way. I hadn't thought about it much in a long time. I just thought I would share this with everyone! I'm sure most of ya'll feel the same way I do. The crappy chrome dome light with the yellow lense and lousy map lights really sucks. It can easilly be replaced by one out of a late 90's to early 2000+ F150 or even Superduty truck. It works even better if you get one out of the rear of a Superduty crew cab, because it has a different lense that angles the map lights down more. They have 2 dome lights. You can get one in black, gray, and tan. The gray one matches my opal interior. All that needs to be done to make it work is to cut off a plastic tab on the back of the newer light and use slightly longer screws. The mounting points are the same. There is a picture in my gallery. The flash made the color look a little off, but in natural lighting it looks fine.

I took the yellow lens off of mine, it makes WAY more light now. The map lights don't point where they should, tho. The map lights point up at the dash, tho, so those are pretty useless.
That's what the different lense is for. They angle the light down. All I know is that it works much better than the older one. Most of the newer lights do not have the lense like mine does. I think it is only in the crew cab trucks rear seat. I agree though that with the other lense the map lights are too high. If you notice the refractors in the map light lenses, it disperses the light and helps angle it down. The maps lights work pretty good and make a lot of light. In a super cab of our era the map lights with the regular lense would be fine, but in a regular cab it needs to have the newer crew cab lense.

or for an even better light sorce and ovehead storage you can get the overhead console out of a olderodle blazer and with a little reshaping with a grinder it fits good ill get pics up later
That sounds like it could be a cool idea. Is that what you did to your truck? I wanted to get an overhead console out of a 92-96 Bronco, but they are too expensive. I guess its because there aren't that many of those consoles around.
I have seen that the 97 F250s that are the same body style as our trucks have that light but I didn't think 96s did.
i have a 97 250. not sure what "that light" is, but i can look at something if you want. look at my gallery too, always though i had the same light as everyone else.
My truck didn't come with sway bars, so I bought the aftermarket ones. They are larger in diameter than the stock ones though. That is also part of the reason I bought them. There was no drilling required.
The light we were talking about is the interior light on the headliner or roof.
