Memo to TallPaul Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment
TallPaul here's an unsolicited real life experience from a new user of Valvoline's Synpower Oil Treatment, which I beleive you were the first to recommend on this forum.
Agreed, mostly all additives are not needed. However, Synpower does what it claims at a very resonanle price. I forget what additive it helps, that is lacking in today's modern lubricants?
Case in point: Co-Worker's 1990 Ford 300 I-6. 288,000+ miles. Used as a work truck, rode hard and put away wet... no show truck.
Engine was puffing blue smoke on cold morning start-up, general sluggish but still acceptable power. Sometimes used to pull small ultitlity type of flat trailer.
Did (co-worker) weekend maintenace, new air filter, radiator flush, PCV valve. Oil change with 4 1/2 quarts Valvoline 10w30 Max-Life Oil & 2 repeat two 15 oz. bottles of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment.
I'm told approximately 65-70 miles and one week of start up and cool down cycles, the cold start puff of smoke has been 98% reduced. Engine runs smooth and quiet, and idles quiet when cold. Engine seems to have noticeable pep and overall a much better "feel", even fuel mileage is very good.
Synpower Treatment never used before. I'm thinking too, it's the actual Max-Life oil that is helping, and the new PCV Valve, all could have something to do with the cold start puff of smoke.
However, the Synpower Oil Treatment seems to also have helped. I immediately thought of you when I heard that Synpower from Valvoline was involved.
Good stuff.

One bottle VSOT will boost about 2 to 2.5 cSt. With two bottles your Maxlife 10w30 is going to be boosted from about 11 cSt (not sure you used SL or SM) to about 16 cSt (in theory). So the very thickness may be reducing smoke. Glad it works. Valvo says the VSOT improves cold starting (that said for one bottle, though).
There are about 4 VOA of VSOT on oil guy site. Each varys considerablly. I trust the one Stinky Peterson did (Butler Catapillar Labs) a couple years ago (but formula maybe changed) and it had about 1800 ppm zinc along with lot of other goodies. Latest one someone did this year showed very low additives, not good, but maybe not done right?
Well, I recall it was member DOHC (FTE name) who was the big promoter of VSOT at oil site (Motorbike at BITOG). Said he was getting reduced iron in UOAs with one ounce VSOT per quart, consistently. I like it, but gravitated toward the much thinner SLOB with its 4800 ppm zinc.
Ask me about SLOB, but unfortunately it is getting hard to find anymore.

SLOB is "CD-2 Street Legal High Performance Oil Boost." It comes in a 16 oz pink bottle. Apparently discontinued, it was selling at Big Lots for $1 and $2 a bottle, depending on which BLs you went to. There is still some out there but becoming fewer BL and farther between. I have a 34 bottle stash. Half a bottle per OCI will make SM oil into SL oil as far as zddp goes. VOA (May 06) on it showed 4300 ppm calcium, 4900 ppm phosphorus, and 4900 ppm zinc, with 29.5 cSt 100C viscosity.
