I have a 2000 that has a 6.6 inch lift on it with 36x13.5r16.5 and the ps pump makes a loud wine all the time i know it also powers the brake booster but when your in the cab with the windows up and the radio on and up a bit but not loud you can just hear it scream/wine like thers a load on it. is this the norm for the power stroke set up or is mine just going bad?
Normal on all powerstrokes. I just flushed my system yesterday and it really helped a lot. Do a search on "ps whine" and you will find a lot of write-ups on this topic with detailed instructions on how to do the flush. Good luck.
I have a 6" lift on mine, was groaning while making turns, changed the fluid and it got better for awhile. Then had to replace the pump. Now starting to groan again.
Out of curiosity, did you guy replace it with syn ATF? That's the trick I heard. My Ranger was really bad, but I never did it. Lasted at least 92k when I traded it in for my '250. This one isn't bad at all, but I may go ahead and do it anyway. I'm about to do my tranny, so I might as well grab a couple extra bottles and do the PS while I'm at it.
Get 2 or 3 quarts of Mobil 1 syn auto trans fluid (mercon)(AutoZone sells it). Remove the return line hose from the top Brake Booster. (this is the hose that goes to the top of the PS pump). Attach a length of clear plastic hose and place it into a jug or bucket. With the help of another person, start engine, turn the steering wheel back and forth, while pumping the brakes, while you carefully pour into the pump the new fluid. (Don't let the reservior run low or it will suck air). Watching the color of the fluid going into the bucket. When it runs nice and red, stop the engine. Re-connect the hose and recheck the fluid level..

I second this.....It's fifteen minutes well spent. I dont hear the pump anymore.
I didnt use synthetic because it was my first time doing the flush and I didnt want to screw up with the expensive stuff. Next time it starts whining though I will go with synthetic.

You can use the "Edit" button (look on the bottom right of you post) to fix those. But you only have some much time -- I'm not sure how long it is, but I'm thinking it's like 60 minutes or something...

how fast does it drain when ur doing this?
how would u get the air out of the system?
i know mines low, but not completely sure whats in there? i had my fluid changed at a oil change place 5 months ago. they had a machine with two hoses. one to fill and one to suck out the old stuff. the guy said it was a synthetic fluid he put in.
can i just top it iwth some ATF synthetic?
i know iv spilt some PS fluid from doing different front end work, (turning the wheel while the engine was off, and having the fluid come out the PS pump).
Thanks again to this great site for passing on similar experiences and fixes. My PS pump started making a loud noise many months ago, finally it got so bad I just couldn't stand it. This condition seemed to start after I increased my rim & tire size combination from factory to 16 X 8 Centerlines & 35/75R16 Toyo AT's. Last night I flushed the pump/brake boost with Mobil One ATF by following the procedure listed in this thread.
Did everyone else notice the clamp (factory spring type) used on the brake boost failed to keep the hose from moving. I could pull the entire hose off even with the clamp in place. I'm going to replace with a standard hose clamp.
My PS pump & brake noise has quieted down; I hope it will remain this way.
