PS Whine? Need Confirmation

Can someone confirm that the 2000 7.3 in an F350 Crew-Dually uses the PS Pump as a brake booster? I'm getting what sounds like PS pump whine when I brake or steer. Can someone comfirm if this is correct?

Thanks,
CM

THIS IS CORRECT..... AS THE DIESEL ENGINE CANNOT PRODUCE A VACUUM LIKE A GASOLINE ENGINE DOES.

BRAKE BOOST IS SUPPLIED FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP.
PLUS... YOU CAN FOLLOW THE PLUMBING AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

Thanks 4x4. Is this whine coming from the PS Pump, or Brake Booster?

Also, is there a remedy or do I have to bite the bullet and replace the PS Pump?

Thanks again,
CM

My 350 SRW is doing the same thing and it's my PS pump, I'm just waiting for it to go out since I only drive it on the weekends now. I'll get her change before the summer towing season. Then it's a $150.00 if I replace the pump or $300.00 to have it done.

Have you tried flushing out the fluid with new syn ATF? I did and it made a good difference.

Hey Fat, thanks for the idea I'm going to give it a try. Might as well spend $20.00 or so before I drop big $$.

Can I use any syn ATF or do Ineed to stick with a Mercon like my tranny?

you can go with a cheaper ATF like the motorcraft stuff, or you could be a ford truck "enthusiast" instead of just a ford truck owner, and go with the gold, a good synthetic ATF. to flush, remove the hose that comes out of the reservoir for the PS pump. follow that out of the top of the reservoir (it is the one coming in the top of the reservoir. follow the hose to the booster, it will go up above the booster and make a 180* turn. disconnect the hose at the booster, and put a clear piece of 3.8'' ID hose over the nipple and run it down into a pan/bucket. get someone to press the pedal firmly but slowly, and turn the steering wheel several times while you keep filling the RS pump reservoir. the fluid will start out as a "rootbeer" color and eventually turn to a cherry/grenadine color when you are finished.

Thanks strokin, I plan on using the same Mobil 1 ATF I use in the tranny. I was just wondering if it was just as important to use Mercon.

I was also reading a thread over at TDS about the same thing and some one posted that adding a tube of the limited slip stuff for our rear diff's works wonders? The person said his diesel mech it was a TSB from Ford?

No problem. Here's another one. Once you flush it, turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and leave it overnight. The next night turn it the other way. Alternate for a few days. This allows the little tiny air bubbles a chance to work themselves out which they can't do stuck in a hose.

Thanks for the additional tip Fat Diesel.

I just did the flush and the whining is totally gone!!! Excellent tip. Short of an oil filter, it's the best 15 bucks ever spent toward maintenance.

Is it safe to do this on a 97 exploder also. I plan on doing this on my 2000 7.3 later this month. Never thought about changing that stuff out but I am sure that at 155K miles it more than needs it.
