Sounds like a seal to me, either in the slave cylinder (replace) or the master cylinder (rebuild or replace). I am no expert in hydraulics however.

I guess it would more depend on feed-rate, as well as the tool shape. Someone that knows what they're doing with a lathe and isn't just turning out quantity for profit can do a darn good job with a lathe. I just prefer the grinding method because it will leave nearly a mirror finish. I had to look in my gallery to verify I had a photo of the flywheel in there, and there is. You can see the spiral grooving in that photo, despite the 12,000 miles already on it. Most of that was city driving too, lots of clutch use. This is how a dealership's "Quality is Job 1" service shop re-installed it. If I'd had the time, I would have taken it to have it ground again. With grooving like that, the engine side of that disc isn't going to last long, certainly not the 140K I got out of the original. Shouldn't the flywheel and the pressure plate have equal quality finish on them? Having had several flywheels cut for lightening on my VW, they've always come back with a good finish on the clutch surface. But, I trust the guy that I get machine work done for the VW.
