A newbie so I need some help please. To begin with my gas gauge bounces between a quarter tank and 3 eights when it gets low and I try to keep it above that and yesterday I went to the convience store to fill up but I would have had to wait in line for awhile as about 4 semi's waiting at a one pump station so I parked my truck and went in for coffee and wait till they cleared out.
I parked my truck on a small incline and when I came out to start it all I got was the truck would turn over but no fire. I did notice a noise under the dash that I had never heard before. It sounded just like the clicking noise if you were to take a spark plug out of a gas engine and turn the motor over to see if you were getting fire at the plug but the noise was alot louder.
I got a ride home and got a 5 gallon can and put fuel in my truck and poof she fired right up and that loud clicking noise I had talked about was no longer there so I just figured by me setting on that incline the fuel was in the back of the tank and thats why it wouldn't start before I put the fuel in.
I drove the truck back home and it ran fine and then this morning I went out to start the truck and its doing the same thing as before I put the fuel in. Engine just turn over with no fire and that loud clicking noise again.
Back when I had to replace the cam sensor we also checked the batteries at that time and they showed 85% at that time. I went out and checked and the tach and it does work when trying to start the truck.

Please help if ya can.......Thanks in advance

Hard to say without hearing the clicking but it could be the "machinegunning" of the starter sol. due to low voltage. I know you checked the bat's. but did you clean the terminals. If the terminals are clean I would consider a new "set" of batteries. 85% indicates they aren't up to "snuff". If you have a volt meter, put it on the bat, then crank the engine. If you fall below 10V the batteries don't have enough amperage to start the engine, even if they have a full 12+volts. Volts at no load don't really tell you the condition of the battery. This is why cranking under load and reading voltage gives you a better read on the batteries.
My husband and I drive a 2001 f-250 and recently it did the same thing as you are describing. We thought it was a fuel line and fuel filter... It wasnt we ended up changing air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, spark plugs and finally the under valve wiring harnness and gaskets.. Well that did the trick the loud clicking noise went away and it was alot cheaper to do it yourself rather then taking it anywere. There are two wiring harnesses I would strongly recomend changing them both. I hope you get it fixed soon..

Sounds like batteries to me. The clicking sound is a relay trying to close and there isn't enough voltage so it kicks out. Try jump starting the truck or check battery voltage while the starter is cranking. If your battery voltage reads below about 10.75 your batteries are shot.
Thanks everyone and the truck is back up and running. Early this morning I went out and plugged the truck in to heat up and also hooked a battery charger up in case the batteries were low. I went out about an hour ago and she fired right up. Took it to parts store and had the batteries checked like a couple of ya had mentined and they checked out a little weak so I will go ahead and change the batteries.
I have been told that if you replace one battery you must do both. Is there anything to that ?
And I found out why I was low on fuel as now I have fuel coming out of a overflow that is coming from the fuel filter area and I haven't looked yet but I presume that there is a petcock that has not been turned all the way off when I had the filter replaced last month.
Once again thaks for all the help and if you ever want to build an old hot rod or streetrod and need help just yell as I am more educated in that instead of this diesel stuff........lol.....
Hey all, well same thing here last night. I've optima red tops with about 3 or 4 years on them. I had the same thing,...turns over pretty well, but wont start. I hear a clicking under the center of the dash. tach works while it turns over. Jumped it with my girlfriends truck and presto. It started. I have a charge on it so I can start it in the morning to get new batts. I'll probably get optima's again. . . .got acid in my eye one time and never again. Anyway, I'll post results soon,
