hey my 97 powerstroke is at times dying after startup, idling rough, shakey under hard acceleration on kick if going about 40, and cut out once when i matted it on takeoff. 170,000 miles, and original cps and fuel pump. what u all think?

As for the fuel pump you should check fuel pressure. it should be 40-70 for spec but normally these run 55-70 or so. Also when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Fuel pressure regulator screen cleaned?
Check fuel pressure. Then for $40 I would buy 2 CPS. install one and put the other in the glovebox. then see where you stand.

Along with the CPS you may try unplugging the ICP connector & see if it smooths out. Does it do it warm & cold?....
He means unplug. before you start it up unplug. it will force the PCM to read default values. if it runs better you need a new ICP sensor. To check fuel pressure there is shrader (tire valve) on the fuel bowl. here is a pic that shows the shrader and the ICP sensor
