I myself have never cleaned a MAF, In my 99 f-250 5.4, I think i must have gone through at least 5 of them. 4 of them were thankfully under warranty. I did bite the bullet with the 5th $300 that hurt. Its my understanding that the MAF uses a heated element that depending on the amount of air flowing through will give off different resistance readings. That being the case with my old Gasser, avoid using anything that has a oily base to it, that will cause it to over heat and burn out that element. As far as what to use? I would say start with some low pressure air, and try to get it cleaned up that way.
In my Ranger I $#cked up the air filter and got mud on my MAF. Using tweezers I puller strands out of a cotton ball, sprayed either brake clearer or contact cleaner for a distributor on it (can't remember). Then I threaded the threads around the wire and very very VERY carefully used the tweezers to get rid of the mud. This thing is fineky as all H#ll and exzpensive to replace. To get it out, if you're unsure, it's just something like two bolts and one connector to take apart then you can pull it out. Mine was eaasy because I had the intake apart all the way up to the throttle body.
Does anyone know if there are any differences between the '03-04, 05-06, and 07 MAF Sensors?
After datalogging mine the other day, I have a possibly lame theory as to why some '07's exhibit such horrible lag behavior, and am looking for more info to flesh out the theory...
There's a difference in the 03/04 and 05-07 processors for sure. Give the Ford parts house a call and see if it's a different part#.
Most tech's won't clean a MAF sensor, but use electrical contact cleaner on it. A little different formulation than brake or carb cleaner. This is another reason to NOT use an oiled cotton gauze air filter. It drives the MAF crazy if it gets the least little oil film on it.
