here i am again in need of assistance. my wife and i have a '02 escape 4x4 v6 recently the airbag light came . the dealer said it was the seat belt pre-tensioners causing the problem and it would cost 75 for the part and 180 labor. i'm humbly awaiting your assistance.
It's actually not the pre-tensioners themselves, so much as the yellow connectors where they connect under the seats.
The contacts in the connectors don't make a very good connection, and the higher resistance causes the air bag module to think there's a problem. Air bag systems are VERY touchy about this sort of thing.
The new pre-tensioners have a redesigned connector to eliminate this problem. You could theoretically solve the problem by cutting out the connectors and soldering the wires together (thus eliminating the connectors), but I'm not sure about the legality of this, as it's technically a modification to the restraint system.
Also keep in mind you'll want to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for 30 minutes before messing with these connectors, just to eliminate the slight chance of deploying the airbags.
thanks for the info, i tried to get more from the service writer but he acted like it was top secret and i wasn't smart enough to handle it anyway could i just take the connecter apart and clean the contact points? thanks again
