TS, the modern common-rail direct injection style injectors used on these diesels are not happy with short trips, and those will fail, causing your engine to sound like it has a rod knock, and cost a bunch of money to change. I know that the 6.4 uses some fancy new piezo injector, but somehow I doubt that is exempt from it.
You made the right decision on ordering the V10. For your uses, you will be happier with it. Best thing is that any Ford dealer (and many independent shops) will be able to work on it. The diesels require trained techs who don't exist at a good portion of the dealers. When they do exist, they can be very cocky since they're the only ones who are allowed to work on the things. When I had my Dodge, the certified diesel tech at my local dealer was a complete jerk, I had to report him to the manager several times.
he knows my driving style and fact i can not miss any work or get stranded in south dakota on a hunting trip. his company builds heavy road machinery and use lots of dzs. i sat down with one of his engineers and "saw the light".
Just out of idle curiosity, what was said by this engineer?
I'm convinced the v10 is the right choice for me (short trips unloaded and occaisonal towing around 8k), but what was so convincing?

basically it came down to the things mentioned on this site in my prior threads. the biggest factor was the complexity of the new dzs. my dads company are having to switch to new dz for the 2010 air quailty changes and they are worrried about all the new emissions equip. basically it came down to this - the v10 is very reliable - as most all gas engines are. a new ford dz with 6 radiators, new injector system, new emission system, etc are a potential problem in the future and in my small town he questioned the ability to fix it quickly. yes, it would be covered under warant. but i dont have time to drive to the dealer and deal with all the potential issues. i thought about what i would do with my wife, 3 young children, and 2 dogs if my engine went down on a trip and that sealed the deal. we are talking hypotheticals but the odds far favor the v10 in terms of reliability. that was why i ultimately got the v10. who knows, maybe the 6.4 would have been ok but with my driving style everone says i would be asking for trouble. i really liked the new tundra crewmax drivetrain (the 5.7 is a beast) but it is not in the same league as the f250 for towing.
my order - cc kr v10 4.3 20inch black/tan
back to work

I think you've made a well thought out, wise decision. More and more diesel guys are asking me about my V10 these days. There seems to be a general dissatisfaction among truck buyers with the DPF equipped diesel motors, from all of the manufactures. It will probably take a few years to work out the problems with this setup.
As for the 5.7 Toyota. They build the New Tundra not far from here. They just don't sell that well here in the epicenter of US truck sales. Most with the 5.7 are getting no better fuel mileage, running 87 octane, than my V10 Ford. Jump up to 91 octane (same price as diesel here, 30 cent per gallon premium) and they will average 14-15 mpg on a tank full.
I, as most here, believe you'll be happy with that new truck.
I think you'll like the V10. I know my 2V '00 has worked well for me.

i dont race. - i have 1 speeding ticket in my life. but i travel lots of county road in a retirement community - you can do the math. when i am on call and get called in or late because of the kids to work i cant putz behind grandma doing 45 in a 55 or the county worker in his truck out for a joy ride. (happens every day). i dont speed over 9 over but do have places to go.
yeh = i have a degree in mathematical economics and genetics so you can see how hard it is to go against everyone's logic here. i have never bought anything major because i wanted it - only if i NEEDED it.
thx for the feedback.
The statements here seemed contradictory to me. You had decided on the diesel but said you only bought things because you NEEDED them. You had already said the V10 would do all those things but only took more throttle than the PSD. Heck, a 5.4 would do those things too. I know you would enjoy driving the diesel just as much as the V10, but would you still be able to make that last statement?
For me, the 5.4 would have taken care of my needs. But it was a whole lot easier to spend $600 on my upgrade "wants" than $4,600.
